Question 4 the day: September 11, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Quadratic Equation.
For what value of m will the roots of the quadratic equation x^2 + mx + 4 = 0 have real and equal roots?

(1) 4 (2) -4
(3) (1) and (2) (4) 16
Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:

The roots of the equation are real and equal.

Therefore, D = 0

=> b2 – 4ac = 0

=> mb2 – 4*4*1 = 0

=> mb2 = 16

=> or m = +4 or m = -4.
