Question 4 the day: May 8, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Work and Time.
2 men and 3 boys can do piece of work in 10 days and 3 men together with 2 boys can do the same job in 8 days. In how many days can 2 men and a boy do the work?

(1) 12½ days (2) 18½ days
(3) 25 days (4) 25½ days
Correct Answer - (1)

Solution:

10 (2 men + 3 boys) = 8 (3 men + 2 boys)
=> 4 men = 14 boys or 2 men = 7 boys
Now 2 men + 3 boys = 10 boys
And 2 men + 1 boy = 8 boys
=> 10 boys can do a job in 10 days
Therefore, 8 boys can do a job in or 12 ½ days.
