Question 4 the day: May 2, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Ratio and Proportion.
If x and y are connected by the relation x2 + 4y2 = 4xy, then ratio of x to y is

(1) 2 : 1 (2) 1 : 2
(3) 1 : 1 (4) 4 : 1
Correct Answer - (1)

Solution:

x2 + 4y2 = 4xy can be written as x2 - 4xy + 4y2 = 0
=> (x - 2y)2 = 0
Therefore x = 2y, x/y = 2, hence the ratio of x to y is 2:1.
