Question 4 the day: May 9, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Arithmetic Progression.
If 5 times the fifth term is 8 times the 8th term in an A.P, Find the 13th term in the series.

(1) 1 (2) 0
(3) 13 (4) Cannot be determined
Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

Fifth term = a + 4d.
Eighth term = a + 7d.
From the statement 5(a + 4d) = 8(a + 7d)
5a + 20d = 8a + 56d
3a + 36d = 0 => a + 12d = 0.
13th term of the series is 0.
