Question 4 the day: May 5, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Algebra.
The sum of the ages of a father and son is 45 years. Five years ago, the product of their ages was 4 times the age of the father at that time. The present age of the son is

(1) 36 (2) 9
(3) 5 (4) 40
Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

Let the present ages of the father and son be x and (45-x) respectively.
By hypothesis, (x-5) (45-x-5) = 4(x-5) => x2 - 41x + 180 = 0 i.e., x = 36 or 5.
When x = 5 means Fathers age = 5 and sons age = 40 which is not possible.
Therefore, Father's age is 36 and son's age = 45-x = 9.
