Question 4 the day: August 13, 2003

The question for the day is from the topic of Races.
Three runners A, B and C run a race, with runner A finishing 12 meters ahead of runner B and 18 meters ahead of runner C, while runner B finishes 8 meters ahead of runner C. Each runner travels the entire distance at a constant speed.

What was the length of the race?

(1) 36 meters (2) 48 meters
(3) 60 meters (4) 72 meters
Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

Go from answer choices

Let the race be of length 48 meters

So when A runs 48m B run 36m and C runs 30m

Ratio of distance covered by B : C = 6 : 5

So when B covers 48m C would have covered 40m => B can give C a start of 8m.
