Co-ordinate Geometry - Quant/Math - CAT 2009
Question 4 the day:
August 21, 2003
The question for the day is from the topic of Co-ordinate Geometry.
- What is the equation of the line that is parallel to the line 3x + 7y = 10 and passes through the point (4, 8)
| (1) |
7x – 3y = 46 |
| |
(2) |
3x + 7y = 44 |
| (3) |
9x + 21y – 184 = 0 |
| |
(4) |
3x + 7y = 68 |
Correct Answer - (4)
Solution:
As the second is parallel to the first line, the ratio of the co-efficient of x and that of y will be the same for both the lines.
So, the second line will have a generalized equation of the form 3x + 7y + k = 0.
As, this line passes through the point (4, 8), the equation of the line should satisfy for the given values of x and y.
i.e. 3(4) + 7(8) + k = 0
12 + 56 + k = 0
=> k = - 68
=> Hence, the equation of the line 3x + 7y = 68
